Theft And Shooting Being Investigated In Hopkins County

Authorities are investigating a theft and shooting that left a Dawson Springs man suffering from a gunshot wound. The Hopkins County Sheriff's Office reports the incident occurred at 7:30 Wednesday morning when 73-year old Robert Woodard and 32-year old Christopher Summers, both of Dawson Springs, were asked by a neighbor for assistance with a subject, identified as 49-year old Joseph Scott Eli, who was believed to be stealing a trailer. Deputies say Eli left the scene and the two men followed him until Eli stopped in front of a barn on Logan Road and an altercation ensued and shots were fired. Eli then reportedly fled the scene and was found a short time later on Kirkwood Springs Road where he had run off the road. At that time, deputies say it was discovered that Eli had been shot.

Eli was transported by ambulance to Baptist Health in Madisonville for treatment. Authorities say Woodard was also transported to Baptist Health where he was treated and released for injuries from the altercation.

The sheriff's office is continuing to investigate this case. They were assisted on the scene by the Dawson Springs and Madisonville Police Departments, Caldwell County Sheriff's Office and Charleston Fire Department.
