Several Contested Races In Christian County This Year

There are several highly contested races in Christian County this political season. Sheriff Livy Leavell’s decision to retire left the field wide open for those hoping to win the office. Seven candidates officially filed for partisan elections, with an eighth indicating he would be running as an independent. The May Republican Primary will pit Hopkinsville Police Lieutenant Tyler DeArmond against former HPD Detective Chuck Inman. The May Democratic Primary will see five candidates via for top position: Kahle Morris Jr., Lyn Moe, Julius Catlett Sr., James Dragoo, and Jerry Pepper.

There are four candidates for Christian County Coroner. Zach Lamb and Milton Brooks will compete for the Democrat vote in May and Jane McKnight and Scott Daniel will jockey for the Republican vote in May. Coroner Dorris Lamb is among several incumbents not seeking re-election.

Also not seeking re-election are District Judge Jim Adams, County Attorney Mike Foster, Circuit Clerk Gary Haddock, and 3rd District Constable Robert Webb. While the other two are retiring from public office, Webb is turning his sights to the office of Magistrate. He is one of several who have filed to challenge a sitting Squire. All eight current Magistrates filed for re-election. There are challengers in Districts 1, 3, 5, 6, and 7.

Foster is supporting John Soyars as the next County Attorney. As for Circuit Clerk, Haddock’s son Trent will campaign against Paige Parker for the May Democratic primary vote. Lindsey Adams will be running unopposed for the open judgeship.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Lynn Pryor will appear on the November General ballot with challenger Rick Boling.

Meanwhile, Hopkinsville Mayor Carter Hendricks will be campaigning against two familiar challengers as he seeks a second term in office. Jason McCraw ran in the 2014 Republican Primary race against Hendricks. This time he is on the Democratic ticket. Walter Shamble, who has sought election as Mayor several times before, will run as the independent candidate.

All sitting City Council members filed to seek another term in office. There are challengers in Ward 1, 6, 7, 8, and 11. There will be Democratic Primaries in Ward 1, 6, and 7. Then City-wide elections of Councilmen in November.
