Council Rejects Sunday Alcohol Sales

A push to allow alcohol sales on Sunday fell short during a Tuesday meeting of the Cadiz City Council. A motion put forth by Councilmember Kyle Cunningham that would have permitted the sale of adult beverages by the drink within city limits failed to garner support.

The decision not to take up the issue likely came as a bit of a disappointment to local restaurateurs, a few of whom were present. Prior to council discussion, Nelson Green, owner and managing partner of Harper House, spoke to a nearly full room and told councilmembers the change would benefit business and tourism.

Green also notes restaurants in city limits are in competition with Lake Barkley Lodge, which is outside the purview of city ordinances and can thus sell alcohol on Sundays.

Councilmember Susan Bryant says although she personally has no problem with Sunday alcohol sales, councilmembers must also act in accordance with the wishes of their constituents. Jorge Valdez, manager of El Bracero, was also present and told the council "I've been here a long time and I respect everybody, no matter the decision. I'm staying with Cadiz."

Though the motion fell short on support, amendments to ordinances governing the way businesses are allowed to advertise alcohol is in the works. Cunningham is to be in contact with City Attorney Allen O. Wilson in the coming days to draft an ordinance to that effect, according to council discussion.
