A Sensational Spring Break

Hey parents and grandparents! Looking for fun activities to do during your children’s Spring Break? Come out to Nature Station as we have fun exploring different wildlife with our themed daily programming! Plus, don’t forget about our daily Parade of Raptors at 4:30pm. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a nature hike while you’re here, and make a day of it!
Saturday, April 2 – The Nocturnal Crew
11:30am-12pm – HOOTenanny
Join our naturalists for a program dedicated to our favorite nocturnal singers – our owls! Meet our resident owls up close and learn how they survive in their nocturnal world, and what makes each species unique!
2:30-3pm – Bioluminescence Boogie
*Ideal for home educators
Did you know that some critters as well as different plants and fungi glow in the dark? Learn how these amazing creatures light up the night and get to see a few critters glow with your own eyes!
3:30-4pm – Wolves vs. Coyotes
All animals are amazing, but have you ever wondered how they measure up to each other? Get an up-close look at our resident wildlife and compare the strength, agility, and special abilities of wolves and coyotes!
7:00-8:30pm – Spring Peeper Night Hike – GOLDEN POND VISITOR CENTER
$3 per participant, does not include Nature Station admission. Registration required. Call 270-924-2020 to register.
Calling all hikers! Join us at for a guided 1.5-hour night walk through the forest! We’ll do some fun activities to test our night senses, listen for the first calls of spring peepers as well as plenty of other critters and explore the forest by starlight!
Sunday, April 3 –Predators
1:30pm-2pm – The Endangered Red Wolf
*Ideal for home educators
Who’s hungry like the wolf? Our red wolves, of course! Visit the Nature Station’s red wolves, one of the most endangered mammals in the United States and watch them “wolf” down a tasty treat. You’ll also discover why they were endangered and what scientists are doing to bring them back from the brink of extinction.
2:30-3pm – Crafty Coyotes
Coyotes are well known for their cunning and crafty manner! Help us put them to the test as we put enrichment toys and puzzles in their habitat for these sly canines to solve and get a special treat!
3:30-4pm – Sunday Funday: Bobcat Playtime
Everyone loves having fun and today it’s playtime for Barkley the bobcat! Watch as he reacts to an interesting new food item or an exciting new toy and learn more about how the Nature Station cares for its rescued wildlife through fun enrichment activities!
Monday, April 4 – Reptiles
11:30am-12pm – Snake, Rattle, and Roll
*Ideal for home educators
Have you ever touched a live snake? Here’s your chance! Meet several of our resident snakes as we learn how these unusual creatures survive. We’ll also discuss how to be safe around snakes when we’re outside.
3:30-4pm — Turtle Time
*Ideal for home educators
Turtles are so cool! Some can live over 100 years, some can grow over 200 pounds, and some are even nocturnal! Join us to meet several turtles, learn what makes each unique, and even give them a pat on the shell!
Tuesday, April 5 – Forest Underground –
11:30am-12:30pm – Creep ‘n’ Crawl Nature Hike
*Ideal for home educators
Join a naturalist for a one-mile hike around the Nature Station to see what might be creeping or crawling in the path, under logs and rocks, or in the dirt. You’ll learn why these creatures are uniquely important to the forest underground and how they do some of the most important dirty jobs around.
1:30-2pm – Tales of Scales
Homeschool Month featured program. All are invited to attend!
Get up close and personal with reptiles and amphibians such as snakes, salamanders, and turtles! We’ll introduce you to several ambassadors from the cold-blooded world as we explore the fascinating ways these slimy and scaly critters survive.
3:30-4pm – Goodies for Groundhog
Come see Nature Station’s resident groundhog eat some of her favorite treats during chow time! While we enjoy watching her munch on her lunch, we’ll learn about groundhogs and how they survive as one of nature’s best burrowers!
Wednesday, April 6 – Insects
11:30am-12pm — Incredible Insects
*Ideal for home educators
Did you know that a cockroach can live for three weeks without its head? Insects possess some incredible and interesting survival skills! Crawl on into the Nature Station to learn more about the fascinating world of insects and meet some live examples up close.
3:30-4pm – ‘Possum P.I.
Private investigator? Detective? Marsi the opossum is on the case! Join this super sleuth with the super sniffer as she finds clues, goes through obstacles, and solves the case of the missing treats!
Thursday, April 7 – Amphibians
11:30am-1:30pm – Frog Origami
Join a naturalist to learn how to make your very own jumping paper frog!
1:30pm-2:30pm – SLIME!
Homeschool Month featured program. All are invited to attend!
Frogs, toads, and salamanders are known for their amazingly slimy skin, but why do they have it in the first place? In this program, you’ll get up close with some of our live amphibian ambassadors and have the opportunity to make your own slime to take home!
3:30-4pm – Red Wolf Treat Time
See Nature Station’s endangered red wolves, Jasper and Ember, get a special treat! You’ll also have the opportunity to learn why these wolves are endangered and what we’re doing to help restore the population.
Friday, April 8 – Birds of Prey
11:30am-12pm – Peewee Predators
Don’t let their small stature fool you, these tiny predators are ferocious! From lightning-fast reflexes to silent ninja like movements, these tiny terrors are some of the most fearsome predators around. Come meet some of our smallest native predators and learn how size isn’t everything!
3:30–4pm – Dinnertime for Bald Eagles
Who rules the waters and skies over Land Between the Lakes? The bald eagle, of course! Visit with our resident bald eagles at their dinnertime and discover their secrets of survival. Also find out about the successful bald eagle recovery project that brought this majestic bird back from the brink of extinction in this area.
Saturday, April 9 – Venom
11:30am-12:15pm – Bites, Stings, and Venomous Things

Venom is an amazing adaptation in the animal kingdom! Some critters use it to eat, while others use it as a defense. Come and learn just what venom is, what it can be used for, and how to be safe around venomous creatures!
1:30-2pm – In Cold Blood
Homeschool Month featured program. All are invited to attend!

Springtime is spider time! Argiope, orb weavers, daddy long legs, trap doors, and more are just getting active as the days get warmer. Discover the spiders around you and how to identify them!
Sunday, April 10 – Tree Canopy
10:00am-4pm – I Spy Up High Scavenger Hunt
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a…bird? Look up and all around to find the things that live up in our trees and sky on this unique scavenger hunt! Be it a bird, tree blossoms, or a squirrel, there is lots of life up in the trees! Once you’re done, you’ll receive a prize for your hard work.
11:30am-12:30pm – Tree-toppers Hike
Look high in the sky as we gaze among the treetops! Come along for this one-mile guided hike and keep your eyes peeled for any critters up high as you search for some of the local wildlife that call the tree canopy home.
2:30-3pm – Canopy Critters
*Ideal for home educators
Explore the animal kingdom of the treetop canopy with one of our naturalists! We will meet many of the critters that call it home such as a screech owl, flying squirrel, treefrogs, and more!
3:30-4pm — Sunday Funday: Vulture Playtime
Everyone loves having fun and today it’s playtime for our resident vultures! Watch as they react to an interesting new food item or an exciting new toy and learn more about how the Nature Station cares for its rescued wildlife through fun enrichment activities!
