Gov. Beshear Declares State of Emergency Ahead of Winter Storm

In anticipation of a severe winter storm set to impact Kentucky, Governor Andy Beshear has proactively declared a state of emergency to mobilize state resources and ensure the safety and preparedness of residents.

click to download audioHe also announced the activation of the Kentucky Emergency Operations Center to organize warming shelters that might be required throughout the state.

Governor Beshear stated that two-thirds of Kentucky’s counties are under a winter storm warning from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon, with significant snow and ice anticipated. He emphasized that the ice storm warning in western Kentucky is especially worrisome.

click to download audioHe urged Kentuckians to stay home, if you have power, and stay off of the roads if possible.

Eric Gibson, the Director of Kentucky Emergency Management, announced that they will activate operations at midnight on Saturday and remain open for the entirety of the winter storm event.

click to download audioGibson also mentioned that they are collaborating with county partners to identify locations to open warming centers across the state for those who lose power.

Secretary Jim Gray of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet stated that their crews are prepared and ready to respond.

click to download audioGray highlighted that the state of emergency declared by Governor Beshear on Saturday enabled him to issue an official order temporarily lifting certain drive time and weigh station restrictions for motor carriers involved in transporting emergency supplies or participating in power restoration efforts.

Gray stated that professional snow fighters and snow removal equipment, along with contractors, will be deployed across Kentucky to respond as needed. He requested that Kentuckians remain patient while crews work to clear the roads.

Governor Beshear reiterated the severity of the winter storm and stressed the importance of being prepared.
