National Farm Safety and Health Week is September 15-21, 2024. This year’s theme is “Don’t Learn Safety by Accident.”
Safety on the farm starts with good leadership and setting examples for our youth. Having a love for the farm and an appreciation for its inherit risk are taught to us all at a very young age. One of the most important things we can do is to teach our children how to be safe around the farm. According to Corteva, a child dies from an Ag-related accident every three days. An astonishing 50% of all poisoning from chemicals (household & farm) happen with children under the age of six. The top 3 contributors to fatalities involving children on the farm are Tractors, ATV’s, and Drownings. Statistics show that 1/3 of farm related fatalities are contributed to farm machinery with the leading four being collisions with nonfarm vehicles, overturns, runovers, and entanglements. As we celebrate National Farm Safety week remember to take the time to set a good example for our youth and show them what farm safety looks like.
