Battling tough competition and tough weather conditions, the Christian County Colonels saw some positive steps Saturday as they picked up a pair of wins in the double-elimination bracket portion of the 2024 Best of the West 7-on-7 passing tournament at the Stadium of Champions. The Colonels finished their day with 2 wins and 2 losses.

The opener Saturday was a nail-biter with a big-play ending. Trailing in the final minute of their game with Fort Campbell, the Colonels got a final chance with 3 seconds left and the Colonels caught a deflected pass in the end zone to take the 25-24 win. The pass deflected off the hands of the intended receiver, who was double covered, and was snagged by another Colonel in the area before it hit the ground.

The momentum of that win carried the Colonels to their best game of the weekend. Christian County put up 42 points in the next game against Kenwood and advanced to the winner’s bracket semifinals with a 42-23 win over the Knights.

However, Macon County awaited the Colonels in the winner’s semis, and the Tigers, who would go on to win the championship, were putting up points faster than a climbing thermometer Saturday. Macon County took a 43-5 win, sending Christian County to the consolation bracket.

There waiting for the Colonels was defending champion Gibson Southern. By this point, the heat may have begun to have an impact on the young Christian County team and Gibson Southern advanced on by eliminating the Colonels from the tournament 34-4.
