Work on I-24 near the Calvert City exit has seen extended delays and caused some traffic issues for drivers using U.S. 62 as a detour. And the problem isn’t expected to improve during this week’s holiday travel.

Keith Todd with the District 1 transportation cabinet said with I-24 restricted to one lane, drivers have been using U.S. 62 between Exit 40 at Eddyville and Exit 27 at Calvert City as an alternate route. However, the volume of traffic over the weekend also caused substantial delays along U.S. 62.

Todd said two lanes of travel would be open during the work zone by Tuesday afternoon but suggested drivers use U.S 68 between the 65-mile marker in Cadiz and returning to I-24 at the 16-mile marker in McCracken County.

He went on to say that one-lane traffic will resume for the work zone on Tuesday, July 9. Work being completed includes bridge painting and major rehab work on the Tennessee River Bridge.

On July 9, the contractor will add an overhead tarp containment structure to allow cleaning and painting of the steel arch.

The target completion date for all work is December 1.
