Opal Alexander, 95, of Cadiz

Opal Choate Alexander, 95, of Cadiz, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at her home.

Born January 31, 1929, in Trigg County, she was the daughter of the late Melvin and Jennie (Skinner) Choate.

Opal married James “Jay Bird” Alexander on May 3, 1947. They raised three children and shared 61 years of life until his death in 2008. She worked as a telephone switchboard operator for the old Southern Bell and at a furniture store in downtown Cadiz before dedicating herself as a full-time homemaker.

Opal was a member of Cadiz Methodist Church and a longtime active member, alongside Jay Bird, of the Woodmen of the World, Cadiz Chapter 20. She enjoyed traveling, shopping, cooking, playing Rook, and spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandy Oakley; son-in-law, Dan Oakley; and three brothers, Norman Choate, James Choate, and Chapel Choate.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth Alexander (Beverly) of Cadiz; daughter, Kathy Chewning (Joe) of Cerulean; four grandchildren, Barry Alexander (Charity), Brandon Alexander, David Thomas (Yasmin), and Sara Croom; and six great-grandchildren, Victoria Alexander, Luke Alexander, Libby Alexander, Alexander Thomas, Zachary Thomas, and Ava Croom.

Arrangements are being handled by Goodwin Funeral Home, Inc., 138 Main Street in Cadiz, where the family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2024. Funeral services will follow at noon, with Rev. Jamus Redd officiating. The burial will be in Siloam Church Cemetery in Trigg County.
