A Lyon County senior got to play on the Rupp Arena floor and later received a scholarship at midcourt during the Sweet 16 last week.

Luke Burchett was one of six students statewide who received a 2024 Kentucky High School Athletic Association-Kentucky Department of Agriculture Ag Athletes of the Year award by Agriculture Commissioner Jonathon Shell.

Burchett received a one-time $1,000 scholarship, payable to an institution of higher learning, granted to high school seniors involved in athletics and agriculture who plan to further their education at a two- or four-year institution or trade school.

The scholarships are made possible by the “Ag Tag” Fund, which is supported by voluntary donations from Kentucky drivers when they purchase or renew their farm vehicle license plates. Last year, Kentucky farmers contributed $735,815.88 to the Ag Tag Program, with the scholarships serving as one of the ways in which the funds are used to support Kentucky’s agriculture youth.
