Trigg County Fiscal Court — along with County Clerk Carmen Finley — had every reason to believe the new magisterial voting districts were locked into correct order.
The 2020 Census, followed by the global pandemic, shifted the realignment requirements to last year, where local officials — Democrats and Republicans — reviewed and authorized some minor changes to accurately split population.
During this past Tuesday’s meeting, however, Finley confirmed that some concerns have arrived.
Concerns that weren’t originally in Trigg County’s control.
A yellow line was drawn straight through Trigg County, one she said that separates the newly-refitted house districts.
Because this wasn’t taken into account, Finley added that the populations had to be legally rebalanced for fairness.
The most changed region is District 1, currently served by Magistrate Mike Wright. It shifts his constituency from south of main street to Caledonia Road, to south of Caledonia Road near Freeman and Grigsby Cemetery roads — removing the northwest portion, and moving it to the southeast.
The proposed fix earned its first reading, and was approved.
The changes have to be put forth to the public, and a 20-day clock activated, before a second reading makes the change official.
In other court news:
— Magistrates approved the purchase of a new-to-the-county 2012 Freightliner truck from Ken Lugibihl Truck Sales in Bluffton, Ohio, for the price of just over $72,000. Road Supervisor Brandon Calhoun told the court he had test-driven the vehicle, and found it fitting for Trigg County’s fleet. A similar vehicle was part of a wreck-insurance settlement last year, which will help defray its cost against the general fund.
Judge-Executive Stan Humphries said the truck was needed for the county.
A bid for a brand-new truck out costing $129,000 out of Longview, Texas, was rejected by the court.
