Week 3 of Kentucky’s Legislative session comes to a close in Frankfort Friday afternoon, and Senate Bill 7 has been moved to the floor.

Charlie Baglan, Legislative Session broadcaster for the Legislative Research Commission, has details on what this measure could mean for homeschool students and access to KEES money for a college education:

One of the 20 sponsors tagged on Senate Bill 7 is State Senator Jason Howell, of Murray.

He said the legislation brings about a bit of fairness for students and families who wouldn’t have access to tax dollars otherwise.

One criticism of the bill, however, is that homeschool students may — or may not — be subject to the same rigor as Kentucky’s public and private high school students, and thus could game the system.

Howell noted, however, that a few families have been gaming GPA’s, and that lumping the few with the many who deserve state appropriations isn’t judicious.

Within the last 10 working days, Howell has also filed resolutions seeking signage for two historical moments in Trigg County: one honoring the nine fallen Fort Campbell soldiers in the March 2023 crash, and a pair of markers in Land Between the Lakes for Ed Harrell — a native of Turkey Creek and Golden Pond, who at the time of his death was the last surviving member of the U.S.S. Indianapolis naval disaster during World War II.

Trigg County’s crash site already has a formal emergency marker in place, following a ceremony conducted late last year.
