More snow is expected to fall today after a system moved through overnight a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6:00 tonight.

In addition, frigid temperatures are expected throughout the week, with wind chills in the negative digits. This cold weather will persist every night except for Wednesday night. On Thursday, a reinforcing blast of Arctic air is expected, which may bring the potential for light snow.

The National Weather Service said this system also brings one of the longest cold streaks in over 20 years. Lows are expected to be in the single digits, with wind chill factors of -10 to -20.

Transportation officials said the extreme cold temperatures pose a safety concern for both their personnel and anyone on the road in the coming days. Even a simple inconvenience like a dead battery or flat tire can quickly become life-threatening in such extremely cold temperatures.

Transportation District 1 has approximately 200 employees involved in snow response efforts, with 115 snow plows, five tow-plows, and 17 contract plows to cover 2,850 miles of highway in the 12 westernmost counties of Kentucky. The district includes sections of Interstate 24, I-69, and the Purchase Parkway.
