Further resolution in the case of two Hopkinsville men charged in connection with a shooting outside the Princess Theater in 2021 that led to the death of a Hopkinsville woman could see progress in their case by the end of the month.
Jaquavian Spencer and Zamarius Humphries are charged with first-degree assault, being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun, and complicity to murder and assault.
The latter two charges were added by a grand jury indictment last August.
Former Commonwealth’s Attorney Stephanie Bolen sought the latter charges, telling the court that Spencer and Humphries began shooting at each other. Spencer was injured in the shooting with a third person, Deovion Day, opening fire and striking Aniya Collins in the crossfire. Collins was pronounced dead at the scene while a second person, G’Teria Acree, showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg following the altercation.
Last week, Commonwealth’s Attorney Maureen Leamy, who was elected in November, said she will be looking to dismiss the complicity charges that were added to Humphries and Spencer in August and would like to discuss a resolution with the defense attorneys.
Sands Chewning, the attorney for Spencer and Humphries, said his clients have been in jail for nearly two years and should have their bonds reduced if those complicity charges are indeed dropped by the court.
