A Cadiz man was charged with his fifth DUI after leading law enforcement on a short pursuit on Martindale Drive in Trigg County Tuesday.
Cadiz Police Officer David King says he was called to the area for a report of a reckless driver who was possibly intoxicated and found the vehicle behind a home with 33-year-old Henry Wharton Jr. in the driver’s seat.
As King approached the vehicle, Wharton reportedly drove off with no headlights on and would not stop as King pursued him in his vehicle.
King says Wharton drove into a field and turned around before stopping on Cavanaugh Street and as King attempted to block in Wharton’s vehicle he tried to hit King’s cruiser when he fled again.
The pursuit reportedly came to an end back near Martindale Drive and Wharton tried to flee on foot but was quickly taken to the ground as he continued to resist arrest.
Wharton was found to have had four previous DUI charges since 2017 and was operating the vehicle on a DUI-suspended license.
He was arrested and charged with failure to or improper signal, disregarding a stop sign, reckless driving, failure to illuminate head lamps, first-degree fleeing or evading police, second-degree fleeing or evading police, second-degree disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, driving DUI suspended license, first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, and DUI fourth or more offenses.
