Kentucky Council Urges Help For Gambling Addiction As Sports Betting Is Legalized

The Kentucky Council on Problem Gambling is urging individuals to seek help for problem and addictive gambling as sports betting becomes legal in Kentucky.

They offer a helpline at 1-800-GAMBLER for confidential referrals to support groups and counseling.

The council appreciates the state’s efforts in creating a program and wants the public to know that limited services are available. They also highlight the potential increase in gambling problems with mobile sports betting. The council will present gambling counselor training programs in 2024.

Problem gambling is a public health concern with associated poor health and increased medical utilization. Warning signs include preoccupation with gambling, lying about money bets, anxiety or sleeplessness, and borrowing or stealing money. Individuals can gamble responsibly by considering their responsibilities, and stress levels, and setting limits.

A brief three-question screen can help determine if there is a gambling problem. Help is available at 1-800-GAMBLER via phone call or text message.
