Grand Jury Returns Indictments For Child Abuse And Wanton Endangerment

The Christian County Grand Jury returned several indictments Friday on charges of child abuse, burglary, strangulation, wanton endangerment, and other offenses.

A true bill was returned on 29-year-old Kevin Stokes, of Oak Grove, on one count of first-degree criminal abuse – child 12 or under, first-degree strangulation, and first-degree fleeing or evading police on foot.

The charges stem from June 23rd after Oak Grove police reported the child’s mother came to the police department and stated that Stokes had assaulted and choked her child. Stokes was reportedly arrested two days later on Caroline Drive and booked into the Christian County Jail.

33-year-old Devan Matlock, of Hopkinsville, was indicted on charges of first-degree burglary, convicted felon in possession of a handgun, and failure to notify address change to the Department of Transportation.

The charges stem from May 24th when Hopkinsville Police reported that officers responded to a disturbance on Young Love Street where Matlock had been given a trespass warning for the property. Police said Matlock entered the apartment and would not let the man inside the residence leave. According to officers, Matlock was arrested after he was found hiding under a coach in the apartment.

True bills were returned on 19-year-old Tesean Diuguid and 19-year-old Kyan Buckner, both of Hopkinsville, on charges of receiving stolen property – a firearm and tampering with physical evidence. Diuguid was also indicted on five counts of first-degree wanton endangerment while Buckner was indicted on five counts of first-degree wanton endangerment – complicity.

The charges stem from May 24 after Hopkinsville police investigated a shots fire call on East 18th Street at the intersection of South Virginia Street where officers found five shell casings in the roadway. The investigation led police to Grey Fox Court where Diuguid and Buckner were taken into custody. Police also reportedly found several firearms that had been reported stolen out of Clarksville on the back porch of the home on Grey Fox Court.

47-year-old Jeffrey Proffitt, of Hopkinsville, was indicted on two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree assault, and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun.

Proffitt is accused of shooting a woman in the leg during an argument at a home on Petsch Lane on June 24th. The woman was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville for treatment.

And, 25-year-old Danilo Martinez, of Oak Grove, was indicted on charges of first-degree strangulation, fourth-degree assault, first-degree fleeing or evading police, and resisting arrest.

According to the indictment, Martinez is accused of striking a female and applying pressure to her throat or neck on July 5th. He reportedly disobeyed law enforcement’s directions to stop when he tried to elude police. He’s also accused of refusing to cooperate with officers as they were taking him into custody.
