The whirlwind tour continued Friday morning for the state-champion Trigg County Special Olympics basketball squad — when the whole of Main Street between the board office and the gymnasium was covered with proud students, faculty and staff, celebrating their accomplishment.
All of them were waiting for the one special thing: the unveiling of the permanent, state-approved green and white sign. One that will forever read: “Trigg County Special Olympics Basketball Team, Class I-A 2023 Division State Champs.”
Keshaun Grant, a ninth grader at TCHS and member of the team, shared a poem he wrote titled “A Place Where Everyone Belongs.”
It captured the spirit of the group, and the warmth of a rallying community surrounding them.
Representative Walker Thomas said the sign came to be through phone conversations from Cadiz Mayor Todd King and Sponsor Theresa Wilson.
The effort, he added, was expeditious.
King gave thanks to the Special Olympics staff, which had to quickly rebound and regroup after the pandemic in order to get those with needs back on track.
Wilson admitted she didn’t think a sign would be completed at all, much less this soon, because it could so easily be forgotten.
But nobody forgot on Friday, and her voice cracked.
Superintendent Bill Thorpe said the team has, and will continue, to uplift the Wildcats.
As the covers unfurled from the sign, the team gasped — and the students across the street roared.
The team won its title following a stint in Louisville this past March.
