Winners of the 2023 state championship in basketball, the Trigg County Special Olympics team received a real surprise at Monday night’s fiscal court meeting — when Sheriff Aaron Acree, the Trigg County Sheriff’s Office and other dignitaries presented the super squad with their own massive title trophy, one taller than some of the players.
Like the recent Cadiz City Council meeting, in which officials proclaimed April 5 “Special Olympics Day,” many wept.
Coach Clarence Choate was overcome with joy.
Prior to the trophy presentation and some team photos with the hardware, families enjoyed a bit of delicious cake and punch, courtesy of the court and the sheriff’s office.
Judge-Executive Stan Humphries also shared the county’s own proclamation for “Special Olympics Day.”
In mid-March, this team — which has more than 20 student-athletes, young adults and cheerleaders — earned their title in Louisville behind a 31-19 victory.
