Hopkinsville recently played host to the Scripps National Spelling Bee regional qualifying tournament.

Visit Hopkinsville Executive Director Brooke Jung told Your News Edge, when it was all said and done, the tournament featured three western Kentucky winners.

Jung said it was an honor hosting the annual event.

The event was held with the help from a grant from Kentucky Tourism, with plans to host the spelling bee in Hopkinsville again next year. Even with state support, there were local community partners involved.

The spelling bee at the Alhambra Theatre, featured seven regional contestants, Jung thinks they can triple that number in 2024. Visit Hopkinsville will be providing the three winners a $500 travel stipend for their trips to Washington, D.C.’s competition this summer.

The winning word was permafrost. That occurs when ground stays frozen for at least two years, often much longer, and contains soil, rocks, ice, and organic matter.
