Katherine Demps received quite the surprise Thursday afternoon, when the panel of circuit court judges robed her prior to being oath-sworn in front of packed crowd at the Christian County Justice Center.
A historic moment, Demps takes over the newly-created judge position in family court — prepared to take on the many challenges that come with assisting families and loved ones through litigation.
Licensed to practice in 1996, Demps has been focused on family law alongside her father, Daniel, for the majority of her career. Before and during her education, she previously clerked with former judges Edwin White and Pat Higgins.
During the November general election, Demps won the seat over former Family Court Judge Judy Hall 8,038 to 4,546.
Her term begins January 1, alongside fellow Family Court Judge Jason Fleming.
Demps took her oath on a Bible, held by her mother.
