July Jobless Rates Continue To Show Slight Decline

The unemployment rate in the nine-county Pennyrile region continued its slight decline over the summer and is nearly a full percent below the same time last year.

Christian County’s July unemployment rate was 5.4%, which was the same as last year. The rate was 6.1% in July 2019.

The estimates from the Kentucky Center for Statistics show Christian County with a labor force of 25,195 people, which is an increase of 418 people from July of 2019.

The numbers show 1,363 people actively seeking work in July.

In Trigg County, the July jobless rate was 4.7%, down a tenth-of-a-percent from June and a full percent less than July of last year.

The estimates show Trigg with a civilian labor force of 6,169 people, up nearly 200 people from July of 2019 in the summer before the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

The numbers show 287 people actively seeking work in July, which is up nearly 40 people over a three-month period.

In Todd County, the July jobless rate was 3.5%, the lowest in the nine-county Pennyrile region. That was down two-tenths-of-a percent from June.

The estimates show Todd County with a civilian labor force of 5,523 people, which is a three-month increase of 70 people.

Statewide, unemployment rates fell in 117 counties between July of this year and last year and rose in three.

Woodford County and Cumberland County recorded the lowest jobless rate in the state at 3%. Todd County had the ninth lowest in the state.

Magoffin County recorded the state’s highest unemployment rate at 11.2%. It was followed by 10 eastern Kentucky counties — all over 7.2%.
