Deadline to File for May Primary Extended to January 25

The filing deadline for candidates in the May primary election has been extended nearly three weeks following passage by the Kentucky General Assembly and signed into law by Governor Andy Beshear Thursday night.

The new deadline is Friday, January 25 although the law stipulates it will return to the first Friday in January 2023.

Both the House and the Senate are scheduled to remain in session Saturday to give final passage to redistricting bills drawn up by the Republican super-majority that include new maps for the state House and Senate, Kentucky’s U.S. House districts, and the Kentucky Supreme Court.

Since the bills making the new districts may not go into law for weeks, House Bill 172 moves back the filing deadline to later in the month so political candidates will know exactly what races they can enter.

The new law not only pushes back the filing deadline for candidates to the state legislature, Congress, and the Kentucky Supreme Court, but also every local, state, and federal race that will appear in the May 17 primary election.
