The Christian County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office is the latest county that will make the transition to a Driver Licensing Regional Office.
Transportation Secretary Jim Gray announced Thursday morning that seven more counties in the commonwealth will make the transition in November to a new, secure driver-licensing model, administered by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet that gives Kentuckians more choices and modern services.
As previously reported, the traditional issuance system of licenses and permits initiated at the Office of Circuit Court Clerk in each county across Kentucky is being phased out and replaced with a network of KYTC Driver Licensing Regional Offices. To date, officials indicate 20 regional offices have been opened statewide, with more to come. Officials with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and circuit court clerks across the state are working together to smoothly complete the transition statewide by June 30, 2022.
The other counties joining Christian County in the transition next month will be Allen, Butler, Edmonson, Nicholas, Perry and Powell, bringing the number of counties to have made the transition so far to 74. State officials say the Office of Circuit Court Clerk in each of the seven counties will refer residents to driver licensing services effective November 29.
Residents of counties making the transition may renew or apply for a REAL ID or new standard card version of driver license, learner permit, commercial driver license (CDL) or ID card at any KYTC Driver Licensing Regional Office. State transportation officials also encourage applicants to make an appointment online. Walk-in customers are welcomed on a first-come, first-served basis until available slots are filled.
To date, officials note more than 43,000 Kentuckians have skipped a trip to a regional office by renewing their current license online, and more than 1,000 have been served through the mail.
KYTC regional offices that have opened in western Kentucky are located in Bowling Green, Madisonville, Owensboro, and Paducah.
