LWV Asks State Legislators To Think Of Hopkinsville When Redistricting

Sarah Brechwald

The League of Women Voters of Hopkinsville took the time to talk about state redistricting during a National Day of Action event Thursday.

League member Sarah Brechwald says redistricting is one way to ensure we have a good government and occurs every ten years in Kentucky.

Currently, Hopkinsville has three representatives in the state House and one state Senator. The local league believes the city should have simpler districts.

When it comes to the redistricting process, state legislators draw the maps and vote them into law for Kentucky and U.S. representatives. Brechwald adds they believe some may use that power to their advantage.

Brechwald says the Day of Auction topic was not meant to criticize the current legislature but to offer a way to help the city’s and county’s voices be heard.

The league hopes that legislators will host public meetings to receive input on the proposed maps and allow everyone to be a part of the entire process.

The new redistricting process will get underway after all of the 2020 Census data is received later this year. The new maps could be voted on during the 2022 Kentucky legislative session.
