Not Guilty Plea Entered For Will Jackson Road Murder Suspect

A not guilty plea was entered for the Trigg County man accused of murdering Thelma Barnett and setting her Will Jackson Road home on fire in September.

Jonathan McCoy appeared virtually in Trigg County Circuit Court before Judge C.A. Woodall Wednesday afternoon. During his appearance, it was mentioned that defense attorney Shannon Powers was now representing McCoy.

Judge Woodall asked McCoy if Powers has talked about the case with him. McCoy answered no.

McCoy was indicted by a Trigg County Grand Jury on Wednesday, February 24, on charges of murder, abuse of a corpse, kidnapping, second-degree arson, tampering with physical evidence, first-degree burglary, and first-degree felony offender.

The charges stem from September 16, after state police said McCoy tied Barnett’s hands behind her back, strangled her to death, and then set fire to her home with her body still inside.

McCoy remains lodged in the Christian County Jail on a $2 million bond.
