Secondary Roads Remain Slick And Hazardous

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews in District One and Two will resume operations this morning to treat ice and black ice on bridges, overpasses, and other trouble spots around the area.

Major roads are mostly clear with isolated slick spots and patches of black ice. The exception could be interstate and parkway entrances and exits that still have some ice on them. Although secondary roads improved somewhat Thursday, many still have a coating of some ice in some spots. State, County, and city road crews worked throughout the day Thursday to spread salt and ice fighting chemicals to help improve road conditions.

Spokesperson Keith Todd said the Snow and Ice Team says crews are working this morning to salt bridges, overpasses, and other potential trouble spots in time for the morning commute.

Todd said crews worked with a sense of urgency Thursday to spread salt and other ice-fighting chemicals to get area highways as clear as possible while temperatures were in the mid-20s. He notes when overnight lows drop into the teens, the chemicals are less effective.

Transportation cabinet engineers remind everyone to limit travel due to the potential for hazardous driving conditions. If you must travel, you are advised to reduce speed to meet road conditions.

The main concern overnight was the potential re-freezing of any remaining moisture on driving surfaces, particularly on bridges and overpasses. Some freezing fog may also be possible around larger bodies of water.

Cold temperatures going into the weekend are expected to reduce the ability of highway crews to improve driving conditions through about Tuesday.
