Effort Underway To Name Navy Destroyer After Trigg Native And War Hero

A project is in the initial stages to ask the U.S. Navy to name a new destroyer in honor of Trigg County native and Civil War hero, Admiral Silas Wright Terry.

Trigg County Historical Society President Bob Brame tells the News Edge a group member recently brought up the idea.

Brame adds Admiral Terry was a fantastic and unique individual.

Admiral Terry was among the group that protected President Abraham Lincoln when he visited Richmond, Virginia, on April 4, 1865, two days after Confederate forces evacuated the city.

Brame says there are other important things Admiral Terry did as well.

At the time of his death on February 11, 1911, Terry was one of the United States’ most honored and respected retired Navy officers.

The project is something the Trigg County Historical Society can not do alone.

Brame says a community committee needs to be formed to explore the idea further and discuss the next steps for the project.
