Governor Andy Beshear announced the Kentucky State Capitol would close completely beginning Sunday.
Beshear said these heightened security measures around Capitol in Frankfort follow the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Beshear added the closure would be in effect for all grounds of the building.
Brig. Gen. Hal Lamberton, Adjutant General of the Kentucky National Guard, said Guard soldiers’ involvement in the security effort had been approved. Also, Acting Commissioner Lt. Col. Phillip Burnett Jr., of the Kentucky State Police, said the measures were necessary to protect both the public and state buildings.
No date has been released by Beshear on when the Kentucky State Capitol building would re-open.
To further ensure the safety of everyone – both on or around the grounds and in the neighborhoods surrounding the Capitol in Frankfort – we will be closing the Capitol grounds entirely on Sunday. Read more: https://t.co/tHdol4XBGl pic.twitter.com/TgKGXleV90
