An Eddyville teen is facing several charges after he reportedly stole a vehicle and led a deputy on a high-speed pursuit in Lyon County that ended when the teen crashed into a metal utility pole early Saturday morning.
Lyon County Sheriff Brent White reports the pursuit began shortly after 2:00 a.m. on US 641 about 3.5 miles north of Eddyville. He says Deputy Keith Suits was on patrol and attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle he met after the driver failed to dim his headlights and had a taillight violation. As the deputy turned around, the driver, later identified as 18-year old Cameron Doles fled southbound on US 641 at speeds over 100 mph, causing the deputy to lose sight of the vehicle.
Sheriff White says Deputy Suits found the vehicle a few minutes later when two motorists stopped to render aid at the intersection of US 62, US 641, and KY 3305 where Doles had crashed his vehicle head-on into a metal utility pole at a high rate of speed. Doles then fled on foot and was picked up by a passing motorist and taken home.
According to Sheriff White, deputies found Doles at home and he was detained without incident.
Sheriff White says an investigation revealed Doles had stolen the vehicle after apparently waiting for the owner to fall asleep at his home in order to get access to his vehicle keys to steal the car.
Doles was transported by Lyon County EMS to the Caldwell County Medical Center for treatment of injuries and later lodged in the Crittenden County Jail. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, theft by unlawful taking-auto under $10,000, no operator’s license, and other violations.
Sheriff White also says at the time of this incident Doles was on bond for two other auto theft-related offenses out of Lyon Circuit Court and an unrelated criminal offense out of Lyon District Court.
