Temporary Westbound Detour Along I-24 Thursday Night

KYTC Map

Another temporary detour on Interstate 24 in the extended work zones is planned for Thursday evening, but this time it will affect westbound motorists traveling through parts of Lyon, Caldwell, and Trigg counties.

Spokesman Keith Todd with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the temporary detour is to allow pothole patching and shoulder repairs for Thanksgiving Holiday traffic.

According to Todd, motorists should be prepared for the temporary detour between the 65 and 51-mile markers will begin at 5:00 at the U.S. 68 Cadiz Exit 65 Interchange.

During this temporary closure of westbound traffic, Todd says there will be a marked detour along U.S. 68 East to Kentucky 139 North to return to I-24 at the Cadiz-Princeton Exit 56 Interchange. He adds motorists should be prepared to encounter delays as flaggers will be controlling traffic to allow vehicles exiting I-24 to access U.S. 68 East.

The Transportation Cabinet is recommending motorists traveling westbound to take an alternate route by continuing eastbound on U.S. 68 to the I-69 Exit 47 Draffenville Interchange to follow I-69 North to return to I-24 at the Exit 25 interchange near Calvert City. Todd notes this alternate route will allow motorists to avoid traffic backups along the main detour.

Todd also says oversized loads will be directed to pull over and wait for the work to be completed as over-dimensional loads will not be allowed along the detour via U.S. 68 East and Kentucky 139 North. He adds Kentucky 276 is not an approved detour and will be open to local traffic only.

He says the temporary detour is expected to be in place from 5:00 until 9:00 Thursday evening. Todd adds the Transportation Cabinet will try to provide timely notice if the work is completed sooner than expected.
