Commonwealth, Public Defender Fight Over Evidence in East 2nd Street Shooting Case

Next week, a trial is scheduled for a Cadiz man accused in a February shooting of a Hopkinsville man.

Still, the state and his attorney can not come to an agreement over medical records from Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Hopkinsville Police said on February 17, Travis Scott Mayes allegedly shot Derrell Bateman in the abdomen on East 2nd Street. Batemen was flown to Vanderbilt for treatment and identified Mayes as the shooter.

Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Stephanie Bolen said via Zoom Wednesday morning medical records on Bateman are accessible. Public Defender Doug Moore, who is on vacation and appeared virtually, disagreed with Bolen.

Christian County Circuit Court Judge John Atkins scheduled another hearing for Monday morning at 8:00 when Moore returns to town, and discussion will continue about the records.

Mayes is facing a charge of first-degree assault and remains lodged in the Christian County Jail.
