Hopkinsville City Council Ward 3 Candidates Discuss Issues

Two of the three candidates running for the Ward 3 seat on Hopkinsville City Council participated in the League of Women Voters forum last week.

Democratic candidate Aletha West said she wants to change her community and advocate for meaningful change. She added she hopes to establish trust and hope in the city government if she were elected to the seat.

She said the city needs to address homelessness, mental, and physical health of residents.

Independent candidate Karen Bass said she is a small business owner and retired from the finance department at the City of Hopkinsville. She added she hopes to create low-income housing if she were elected to the seat.

When it comes to nonpartisan ward seats, Bass said she is in favor of it, so residents can pick the person that will do the best job and not just vote along party lines.

West added she is in favor of keeping council elections the way they are since a large number of voters are uninformed. She said it was inappropriate to bring up the issue when it was brought up because of the COVID-19 pandemic and that residents should make the decision.

Both said they have plans to keep their constituents informed if they were elected to the Ward 3 seat.
