Trigg Schools Ready to Resume In-Person Classes Monday

Trigg County schools are preparing for students to return to the classroom Monday, nearly a month and a half later than normal, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the regular school board meeting Thursday night, board members heard from all principals in the district as they spoke about how things are going and how they will start in-person classes next week.

Primary school principal Lindsey Kinslow said even though they have been dealing with the renovations they are ready for classes Monday morning.

Intermediate school principal Brian Futrell said things have gone smoothly during their virtual classes over the last four weeks. The school will have nearly 300 students on Monday and Futrell mentioned they are ready.

Middle school principal Amy Breckel said they have changed up how in-person classes will be held by having the teachers change classrooms instead of students. She added they recently did a test run of how classes will operate to ensure the teachers are prepared.

High school principal Shannon Burcham said his teachers will have a balancing act of working with the virtual and in-person classes starting Monday.

Every principal took the time to brag on their teachers and staff for all of the hard work they have put in. Each school will have between 25 and 30% of students continuing virtual classes from home.

In other action, board members approved to purchase a 2021 truck from Wildcat Chevrolet and allow Superior Truck Bed to install equipment. The total cost for the service truck will be around $57,000. Superintendent Bill Thorpe said the truck was badly needed.

Board members also heard from district Finance Officer Holly Greene and approved the working budget for the district. During her presentation, Greene told board members to expect at least an 8% cut in funding from the Kentucky Department of Education, which pertains to certain grants and other funding the district is eligible to receive.
