Jobless Rates Up In All Pennyrile Counties In August 2020

Unemployment rates rose in all 120 counties in Kentucky between August 2019 and August 2020, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics.

In the Pennyrile, Muhlenberg County recorded the highest unemployment in August at 10.5 percent, up from 4.3 percent during the same month last year, while Todd County reported the lowest unemployment rate in the district at 5.5 percent, up from 3.7 percent in August 2019.

Christian County recorded the second-highest jobless rate last month at 8.5 percent, up from 5.7 percent in August 2019, followed by Hopkins County at 8.4 percent in August, compared to 4.2 percent the same month last year.

During the same time period, Caldwell County’s unemployment rate climbed to 7.3 percent from 5.1 percent; Trigg County’s jobless rate rose to 7.2 percent from 4.1 percent; and Lyon County recorded an unemployment rate of 6.4 percent, up from 4.3 percent a year ago.

Crittenden County’s jobless rate last month was 6.1 percent, compared to 4.4 percent in August of last year, and Livingston County recorded an 8.3 unemployment rate in August, up from 5.0 percent.

Kentucky’s comparable unemployment rate for August 2020 was 7.5 percent slightly lower than the U.S. Comparable Rate of 8.5 percent.

Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled to measure trends rather than actually to people working. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians who have not looked for employment within the past four weeks.
