Magistrates Hear Election Update And Approve Tax Rates

Christian County Fiscal Court heard an update Tuesday morning regarding the upcoming general election and accepted the tax rate ordinance on second reading.

Christian County Clerk Mike Kem said voter registration for the general election ends Monday, October 5.

According to Kem, voting by mail is underway and the last day you can request a ballot is Friday, October 9th.

He added early voting begins Tuesday, October 13th, and will be Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m each day. He said they will have two locations for early voting — the Christian County Sheriff’s Office and the Fiscal Courtroom at the Courthouse. He also requested the regular fiscal court meeting scheduled for Tuesday, October 13 be moved to Monday, October 12th due to early voting, which was approved by magistrates.

In addition, Elections Coordinator Melinda Humphries said they have seven proposed voting locations which must be approved by Secretary of State Michael Adams.

She added registered voters can cast their ballot at any polling location.

Kem said there are two constitutional amendments on the ballot that everyone one needs to read and be familiar with prior to voting on November 3.In old business, magistrates unanimously approved the tax rate ordinance for fiscal year 2020-21 on second reading. The real property and tangible tax rates are unchanged and remain at 18.7 cents per $100 assessed value.

Pennyrile Area Development District Associate Director Amy Frogue

In new business, Pennyrile Area Development District Associate Director Amy Frogue presented information regarding submitting an application for a COVID-19 Response Grant, which can be used to help offset election costs.

She added there is no match from the county. Magistrates unanimously approved applying for the grant.

The next meeting will be Monday morning, October 12, at 8:30.
