Governor Beshear Discusses Overdose Awareness Day, COVID-19 Update

Monday was International Overdose Awareness Day and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear took time to discuss what he calls the “other pandemic” that plagues America.

Beshear says the day is to raise awareness, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths, and acknowledge the grief felt by family and friends.

He adds the man died, but was brought back to life with Narcan that Lexington Police and an EMT had when assisting the man.

Beshear says a hotline is available to help those in need, it can be accessed by calling 1-833-8KY-HELP.

During Monday’s briefing, Beshear also announced upgrades to the state’s VINE system, which provides information to victims of crimes. The governor announced over $500,000 in funding to make upgrades to make the system faster and make upgrades to security and more confidential.

Beshear says it will take several months to make the upgrades, with the new system to launch in September 2021.

In addition, Health and Family Services Secretary Eric Friedlander announced they are increasing the child group sizes allowed in child care facilities from 10 to 15. Friedlander adds they are allowing certified homes, licensed infant, and 1-year old classrooms to return to their typical group size.

Governor Beshear announced Monday 381 new COVID-19 cases, with a total case count now at 48,396. The state’s positivity rate now sits at 4.42%. Beshear adds 3 new deaths were confirmed Monday, raising the death toll to 933 over the last six months.
