Health Department Identifies COVID Clusters in Christian County

Christian County’s seven-day rolling average of new COVID-19 cases climbed for a tenth straight day Wednesday although hospitalizations due to the virus are down from last week.

The Christian County Health Department held its first media conference since May Wednesday afternoon and addressed both the climb in active cases and the positivity rate that is over 10-percent in tests conducted by the agency. Health Department Director Kayla Bebout said they have seen seven to nine clusters in the county, with a cluster defined as two or more positive cases in one place.

click to download audioChristian County reported 310 COVID cases in July and has already reached 222 in August. Jennie Stuart Health CEO Eric Lee said the number of patients hospitalized there with a confirmed case of COVID-19 has decreased from 12 last week to five Wednesday.

click to download audioChristian County reported five additional active coronavirus cases Wednesday bringing the total to 243, which is slightly higher than the seven-day average of 241. Amanda Sweeney with the health department said nearly one out of every four positive tests they receive are from someone that is asymptomatic.

The health department is averaging 143 tests per day and will continue to offer them free to the public Monday through Friday from 9-11am at Tie Breaker Park until further notice. The health department will have a special testing window there Thursday evening from 4-6.

Christian County’s 785 total cases rank tenth in the state.
