Fiscal Court Approves Agreement For Signage At Ruff Park

Christian County Fiscal Court magistrates during Tuesday morning’s meeting approved an agreement for a commemorative sign for a private company to be placed at Ruff Park and gave approval for Judge-Executive Steve Tribble to sign an airport grant agreement.

Jonathan Zordel with the Hopkinsville-Christian County Youth League board informed magistrates the league had received a donation from the Sparking Ice Initiative. The initiative is to make improvements and upgrades at parks in communities throughout the United States. He said a company behind the initiative reached out to the youth league’s board after they learned about the tornado that caused major damage at Ruff Park in January.

Zordel said with renovations from the storm damage already taken care of by local partners, they informed the company they would really like a new field covering to replace the dirt on the baseball fields at Ruff Park.

He said the new field covering is made up of a mix of brick, clay, shells, and sand, which is already being used on the fields at Tie Breaker Park. He said the field covering should last at least five-years.

Zordel also informed magistrates the work on the new field covering began over a week ago and should almost be complete. He added Ruff Park is in the best shape it has ever been with all of the renovations and the new field covering.

Zordel added they are really excited and added all the company asked in return for the donation was a commemorative sign.

In addition, the company wanted a soft-opening, or ribbon-cutting, in which representatives would come to Ruff Park and participate with the Hopkinsville-Christian County Youth League and members of the community. Zordel said the ribbon-cutting is scheduled for September 12th at this time.

In other business, Darryl Gustafson, who is a member of the Hopkinsville-Christian County Airport Board, explained to magistrates the Airport Authority and the City of Hopkinsville are co-sponsors of an airport grant application that needs the approval of the fiscal court. He said the total project cost is more than $187,000 and requires no local match.
