Dawson Springs Schools to Begin School Year September 1

Officials with the Dawson Springs Independent School District have decided when students will return but have not yet determined how instruction will look.

In a letter sent to parents and guardians, Superintendent Lenny Whalen announced the school year would begin September 1st with staff reporting to work on August 13th to begin preparations for quality instruction for both on-site and remote student learning. He added school officials will continue to use their recent staff surveys, upcoming household surveys, the most current COVID-19 numbers, and input from local and state health officials to make a firm decision around August 7th as to what direction they will go when reopening the school.

Whalen states survey calls to every student household began Tuesday to compile information concerning in-person instruction and online/remote instruction and which options parents and guardians prefer. He notes school officials will use this information to further develop plans to either host in-person classes five days a week, go on an A-B rotation, or go fully online with Non-Traditional Instruction and remote learning. Parents and guardians, as well as staff, are being asked to be prepared to go with all three options at any time throughout the school year.

Whalen is assuring parents and guardians that student, staff, and family safety are their number one concern and they are striving to do the best for everyone during this ever-changing time.
