Caldwell County Nepotism Ordinance Causes Concern

Some county elected officials are raising concerns over a recently proposed nepotism ordinance.

During a Caldwell County Fiscal Court meeting Wednesday morning Judge-Executive Larry Curling explained what exactly the ordinance would mean.

Caldwell County Clerk Toni Watson addressed the court, stating, in her opinion the ordinance would be a disservice those elected within the county.

She expressed that while the ordinance would affect more than just the County Clerk position it was made personal to her after finding out the court supposedly wanted to pass the ordinance without input from other elected officials.

Caldwell County Jailer Jon Pettit echoed Watson statements concerning the ordinance.

Magistrate District Two Jeff Boone stated he appreciated the comments from Watson and Pettit but expressed it was his understanding the ordinance would be in the best interest of the county moving forward.

Magistrate District Three Brent Stallins also made known his support of the ordinance.

Magistrate District One Elbert Bennett noted he was under the impression the ordinance would only effect magistrates and upon finding out it was for all elected officials he no longer supported the change.

The court then approved the first reading with a four to one vote, Magistrate Bennett being the lone nay. The court will either approve or strike down the second reading of the ordinance during the next fiscal court meeting on Wednesday, July 29th at 9AM in the third floor courtroom in the Caldwell County Courthouse.
