An organization that serves residents in Hopkinsville is turning 57-years old this week.
Human Relations Commission Executive Director Idalia Luna says the organization was ahead of the curve in helping to fight segregation, as they were formed about four years before the state passed Civil Rights laws.
Under the Kentucky Civil Rights Act, local Human Relations Commissions have the ability to enforce state laws dealing with discrimination and support the creation of ordinances banning discrimination.
Luna says they help in many areas where people could be discriminated against.
Luna adds the majority of their complaints come from housing and employment.
Discrimination suits can only be filed against certain employers.
