Governor Announces Reopening Date For Pools With Safety Guidelines

Governor Andy Beshear’s administration announced Tuesday that public pools could reopen at the end of the month and released the guidelines that must be followed.

In addition to the Healthy at Work minimum requirements, the governor’s office says public swimming and bathing facilities must also meet all requirements for Aquatic Centers and Businesses, which include social distancing requirements. Officials say public swimming and bathing facilities should take the water surface and divide by 36 feet, and maximum capacity within the entire facility should be calculated in the same fashion. They add any chairs on the deck should be spaced six-feet apart on all sides.

Also under the social distancing guidelines, any time a swimmer’s head is above the water’s service they must keep a distance of six-feet from individuals who are not members of the same household.

The guidelines also include eliminating the use of any waiting areas, frequent cleaning of any touched areas, and guests will be encouraged to bring their own chairs to the swimming pool.

Once all requirements are met, pools will be able to open on June 29.

Governor Beshear’s office also released the latest COVID-19 data which showed there were 203 new coronavirus cases confirmed Tuesday, bringing the total statewide to at least 12,829 cases.

There were also two new deaths reported, raising the state’s death toll to 512 related to the virus since the outbreak began in mid-March.

According to state officials, 3,431 Kentuckians have recovered from the virus.
