The Christian County Democratic Executive Committee has announced its candidate for Hopkinsville Mayor for the November General Election.
Chairman Jeff Taylor says current Mayor Wendell Lynch will be the nominee for Mayor. The News Edge reported Wednesday that Lynch said he would run in the election to fill the remainder of the unexpired term of Carter Hendricks.
The committee recently invited anyone wishing to submit a name for consideration as the nominee and met to consider all interested parties. The group contacted all names submitted to determine their willingness or interest in running for the position.
Taylor says the office of the Christian County Clerk will be notified in writing of the selected nominee.
Kentucky law says that in the event of a vacancy in the office occurring less than 160 days before the primary election, the nomination of each political party shall be determined by the local governing authority of each political party.
Mayor Lynch was unanimously appointed as mayor by Hopkinsville City Council during a special called meeting in February and took over the duties on March 1. The appointment came after Hendricks resigned as mayor just a little over a year into his second 4-year term when he was hired as the executive director of the South Western Kentucky Economic Development Council.
Prior to being appointed as mayor of Hopkinsville, Lynch was first appointed to Hopkinsville City Council in 2014 and served as the councilman of Ward 6 for three full terms. He said in February prior to his appointment as mayor that he was not running for a fourth term because he felt he had served long enough as a councilman. While a councilman, Lynch served on the Hopkinsville-Christian County Ambulance Service and the E-911 Advisory Board.
If elected as mayor in November, Lynch would serve the remaining two years of the 4-year term.
