Lynch Throws His Name In The Ring For Mayor’s Race

Hopkinsville Mayor Wendell Lynch announced Wednesday morning he will run in the upcoming general election to fill the remainder of the unexpired term of Carter Hendricks.

Lynch was unanimously appointed as mayor by Hopkinsville City Council during a special called meeting in February and took over the duties on March 1. Lynch’s appointment came about after Hendricks resigned from the seat just a little over a year into his 4-year term when he was hired as the executive director of the South Western Kentucky Economic Development Council.

During an interview on WHVO’S Hoptown This Morning, Lynch said he would like to finish out the remainder of the unexpired term as mayor, which would be two years if elected. He added there were several factors that impacted his decision to run for the seat, including those around him and the challenge of getting through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lynch said he wants to continue as mayor because of his desire to serve and meet the needs of the public, and his understanding of how to manage people.

In addition, he pointed out he also has good relationships with the partners in the community and he knows how to build on those relationships.

Prior to being appointed as mayor of Hopkinsville, Lynch was first elected to Hopkinsville City Council in 2014 and served as the councilman of Ward 6 for three full terms. He said in February prior to his appointment as mayor that he was not running for a fourth term because he felt he had served long enough as a councilman. While a councilman, Lynch also served on the Hopkinsville-Christian County Ambulance Service and the E-911 Advisory Board.
