Last Day For Trigg Students Moved Up A Week

Trigg County school board members voted Thursday to move the last day of school for students up another week and set a date for a virtual graduation ceremony.

During the special virtual meeting, Superintendent Bill Thorpe explained that Governor Andy Beshear had signed Senate Bill 177, which removed the 170-day minimum required component for school calendars, as long as the minimum 1,062 instructional hours are met.

Board members approved to amend the school calendar to make the last day of school for students Friday, May 1, instead of Friday, May 8. The last day for staff will still be Tuesday, May 12.

Thorpe says the main reason they wanted to move the last day of school for students is because of fatigue felt by them, parents, and school faculty during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In other action, the board voted to set a virtual graduation date for Thursday, May 28 at 7:00 PM. Beth Sumner, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction says high school administration says the later date will give them enough time to ensure senior grades are posted.

Sumner adds the virtual ceremony will be as close to normal as possible.

The ceremony will be very similar to other graduation time schedules to allow students to send invitations and allow family members to watch it when broadcast. Additional details are forthcoming.
