COVID-19 Forces More Closures At Parks, Facilities In Hopkinsville

More closures and restrictions have been implemented by Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation after recommendations from Governor Andy Beshear at Sunday’s COVID-19 news conference.

Parks and Rec Superintendent Tab Brockman says all outdoor playgrounds, restrooms, and the Hopkinsville Skate Park are now closed to the public until April 13. This is in addition to the initial announcement March 15 that all indoor facilities, programs, and pavilions, were closed including Thomas Street Recreation Center and the Planter’s Bank-Jennie Stuart Health Sportsplex in Hopkinsville.

According to Brockman, the Greenway Rail Trail, Tie Breaker Park walking trail and Pardue Lane Dog Park will remain open, with the public encouraged to follow all health and safety rules. Signage will be posted at all facilities. If any of the aforementioned areas become a regular gathering of over ten people, he says those facilities will also be closed.

Brockman says congregating in parks and the lack of social distancing is certainly a concern, which is why they are putting these actions into motion. He adds the safety and well-being of the community is paramount, now more than ever.

Brockman says these decisions and policies will be revisited again throughout the designated time period, and reevaluated April 6 to consider the status of any appliable state and national mandates. He points out Parks and Rec staff will be monitoring all facilities during four different daily visits, beginning Tuesday, to make sure these changes are being followed by the public.
