Area Legislators Discuss Budget And HB 475

The Kentucky House of Representatives passed the state budget last week and it now sits in the Senate for them to look it over and make changes.

First District State Senator Stan Humphries tells the News Edge they are beginning the dive into the two-year budget.

Work will continue in the Senate and once approved, the budget goes to a conference committee of senators and representatives to make a final version that goes to Governor Andy Beshear.

In other work this week, Eighth District State Representative Walker Thomas notes House Bill 475 failed. The bill would have released the handcuffs from the current Kentucky tax structure.

Thomas adds the current tax structure was created in Kentucky’s constitution in the late 1800s.

Thomas hopes they will revisit the bill in the near future, so the process can begin soon to make the state’s tax structure more competitive.

Comments from all area legislators can be heard during the Legislative Update with Alan Watts on 96.5 and 100.9 WHVO, whvoradio.com, and the free WHVO app after the Sunday Noon News.
