The U.S. Forest Service is making preparations for the bison auction at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area this weekend in order to manage the herd.
LBL Public Affairs Officer Chris Joyner says they have two bison herds — one at the Elk & Bison Prairie in Kentucky and the second in Tennessee. He notes this year’s sale will be from the Tennessee herd.
He says the Forest Service will sell approximately 36 bison.
According to Joyner, the sales are just like any other cattle auction.
He notes all proceeds from the sale go back into the management of the elk and bison herds from feed to improving fencing and other needs.
Joyner says there will be a veterinarian on site to issue certificates immediately after the auction which is required for interstate transport.
The bison auction will be held at the South Bison Range corral located on the west side of the Woodlands Trace National Scenic Byway (TN461) just south of the Kentucky/Tennessee state line, across from the Homeplace 1850 Working Farm.
Bidder registration and viewing begin at 8:00 Saturday morning, February 1, with the auction scheduled to begin at 9:00. Bison purchases may be made with cash, credit card or personal check at the time the bid is accepted.
Joyner also would like to discourage people from bringing children to the bison auction due to climbing and other hazards.
