Kentucky Board Of Education Members Challenge Dismissal

Former Kentucky Board of Education members expect a ruling Thursday morning regarding a motion filed to stop the firing of the board.

A hearing Wednesday in Franklin Circuirt Court, former board members laid out their case to the judge who is expected to make a ruling early Thursday morning.

Board members say in an effort to preserve the non-partisan goals of the Kentucky Education Reform Act, better known as KERA, members of the Kentucky Board of Education filed a lawsuit late Tuesday afternoon.   The motion filed in Franklin Circuit Court challenging Governor Beshear’s action. The board members contend the court should place an injunction on the order to maintain the intent of KERA to diminish the role of political expediency in Kentucky Education.

Board members joining the lawsuit are Hal Heiner, Milton Seymore, Gary Houchens, Ben Cundiff of Trigg County, Laura Timberlake, Tracey Cusick, Rich Gimmel, Kathy Gornik, Alesa Johnson and Joe Papalia.

Board member Gary Houchen says they were encouraged by Governor Andy Beshear saying he will bring a change from the divisive tone in Frankfort. He says the goal in filing the motion is to work cooperatively with the new governor to continue the momentum already in place – not for our sakes, but for the sake of Kentucky’s 650,000 public school students and their futures.
